Management Team Bios
Gwong-Yih Lee, Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO
Mr. Lee, a co-founder of ApaceWave, is a 24 year communications and MultiMedia industry veteran with extensive experience in leading industry leaders as well as successful startups. Mr. Lee sold the previous Company he founded, TransMedia, to Cisco Systems for over $560M in 1999 and became a Senior Director at Cisco Systems from 1999 – 2005. Prior to founding TransMedia Communications, Mr. Lee was the founder & CEO of Digicom Systems, which was successfully acquired by Creative Labs where Mr. Lee was general manager of the Digicom business for over 5 years. Prior to Mr. Lee’s founding Digicom Systems, he held positions of senior engineering management responsibility with Silicon Valley firms including Anderson Jacobson, Racal-Datacom and Cermetek Microelectronics.
Mr. Lee received a Bachelor’s degree from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan and he is a distinguished member of the NCTU Alumni Association. Mr. Lee also received a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering from New York State University.
Jun Shen, Co-Founder and CTO
Dr. Shen is a 15-year communications industry veteran with extensive experience in systems design and project management. His expertise covers DSP algorithms and communication systems. Prior to ApaceWave, Dr. Shen was a founding member and Director of Systems Engineering of Posdata America – one of the first companies to deliver WiMAX Forum certified mobile products. Previously, Dr. Shen played a key role at Aperto Networks (founding board member of WiMAX Forum) to launch its carrier-grade WiMAX systems. He also contributed at TI (Amati), Harris, and Samsung to the development of many widely-deployed wireless/DSL products. Dr. Shen has 7 US patent filings, more than 10 IEEE journal and conference papers, and numerous contributions to the IEEE 802.16a/d/e standards. He also chaired and addressed IEEE premium conferences and consulted for global companies.
Dr. Shen received his BSEE and MSEE degrees from Beihang University in China and a Ph.D. degree in EE from the University of Southern California.
Arthur Hsu, Vice President of Engineering
Mr. Hsu has extensive experience in the semiconductor industry and founded several start-up ventures since 1997. Before joining ApaceWave, Mr. Hsu co-founded ImmenStar, an EPON chip company serving the Fiber-to-the-Home market. In less than three years, the company introduced its first chipset which earned $6M dollar of revenue. ImmenStar was acquired by Cortina Systems in 2007. From 2002 to 2004, Mr. Hsu founded Chiplinks, a joint venture of Shanghai Belling and Taiwan D-Link which was a fabless IC design house that focused on the communication market. Prior to Chiplinks, Mr. Hsu co-founded Sundance Technology in 1997. After successfully developing several generations of Ethernet Controllers which sold into tier one networking companies, the Sundance was merged into IC+ and later went IPO in the Taiwan Stock market. Mr. Hsu also held various manager and technical positions at Cypress Semiconductor, 3COM, AMD and RCA.
Mr. Hsu received a B.S. in Electrophysics from National Chiao-Tung University in Taiwan and MSEE from Arizona State University. He holds 8 US patents.
Dave Sumi, Vice President of Marketing
Mr. Sumi has been a pioneer in Broadband Wireless for over 15 years. He served on the BoD of the WiMAX Forum as Secretary for 6 years, and was instrumental in bringing this emerging technology to the market. For the past 6 years Dave has held senior positions with a track record of success. As a key member of the executive team at TeleICS, Dave was deeply involved in the sale to Qualcomm.
Zhimin Tang, General Manager of Beijing R&D Center
Dr. Tang is a famous expert in China’s computer and semiconductor industry. Before joining ApaceWave, Dr. Tang was a professor and assistant director of Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he lead the national high-tech project design of the Goodson series microprocessors, which were licensed to and became a product of ST Microelectronics. He was also chief scientist or project manager of other important projects, including many-core chip architecture, parallel processor design, core router design, radar signal processing, and pipelined arithmetic units. Dr. Tang has good relationship in many government agencies, and is a consulting expert of Ministry of Information Industry, Ministry of Science and Technology, and National Development and Reform Commission. He is also a member of academic committee of Lenovo’s corporate R&D.
Dr. Tang received his Bachelor’s degree from Nanjing University and his PhD degree from Chinese Academy of Sciences. He also received the Prize for Young Scientific and Technological Professionals from Chinese central government, and the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize from Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Bill Xenakis, Director of Product Management
Mr. Xenakis has over 20 years experience developing and marketing wireless communications products. Prior to joining ApaceWave, Bill was a Product Manager at fixed-WiMAX pioneer TeleCIS Wireless. He also held positions in Product Marketing Management at Terayon, Intel, and VLSI Technology, and in Engineering Management and Design in the ASIC & Custom Products Division of Stanford Telecom.
Bill holds a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from California Polytechnic State University.
